Watch List

The Watch List species are species that are not currently known to occur in Ireland. If these species become established in Ireland they have the potential to be high impact (invasive) species.

Please take note of these species and if you know of their occurrence in Ireland please contact the Data Centre as soon as possible.

Alert! Since the list was compiled in 2007 some of the species have been found in Ireland. View the Species Alerts!

The list was compiled from two sources:

  1. In 2007, Invasive Species Ireland carried out a risk assessment of 171 potential invaders.  23 of the highest scoring (potential greatest impact) of these were entered into a Most-Unwanted list and the 50 next highest scoring species were placed on an Amber List for Potential Species.
  2. The STRIVE project identified a top 13 aquatic Potential high impact species
