Distribution map for Asian Clam in Ireland. Record for Lough Derg on 20/01/2011 highlighted

The National Biodiversity Data Centre has just received notice from Dr. Dan Minchin that the Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea) was recorded in Lough Derg yesterday (20/01/2011).

Dr. Minchin notes that the Asian Clam was found at densities less than 100 individuals per metre squared and in a mud substrate.  It is believed that the Asian Clam settled in 2010.

This new find is of grave concern as it is now in the lower reaches of the River Shannon system and it has the potential to cause serious disruption to the Lough Derg freshwater ecosystem.
